What is L-tryptophan?

L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid and a precursor to the hormones serotonin ("happiness hormone") and melatonin ("sleep hormone"). Besides its function as a protein building block, tryptophan is a starting material for important biochemical processes closely linked to sleep, mood, and cell function.

What are the functions of L-tryptophan?

  • Protein building block: Component of many proteins and therefore important for the structure and stability of tissues.
  • Precursor to hormones and neurotransmitters: Tryptophan is used to produce serotonin, a neurotransmitter that influences mood and well-being, among other things. Serotonin, in turn, serves as a precursor to melatonin, which plays a central role in the sleep-wake cycle.
  • Energy metabolism: Integrated into various metabolic pathways that support the energy supply of cells.
  • Cell function: Tryptophan is involved in the regulation of processes that affect the normal activity of nerve cells and other tissues.
  • Sleep: Tryptophan contributes to the control of the natural sleep-wake rhythm through the formation of melatonin.
  • Hormones: As a precursor to serotonin and melatonin, tryptophan is closely linked to the regulation of mood and sleep processes.
  • Muscles and tissues: In addition to its role in hormone metabolism, tryptophan is an essential component of proteins and therefore important for the general development of muscles and tissues.
  • Metabolic absorption: Tryptophan competes with other amino acids, especially branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), for absorption into the brain. Therefore, it is recommended to take tryptophan on an empty stomach to facilitate absorption.
